Chainring bolts

Replacement chainring bolts in various colors.

Chainring bolts are small fasteners used to secure the chainrings to the crank arms in a bicycle's drivetrain system. They are essential components that ensure the chainrings remain securely attached to the crankset, allowing efficient power transfer from the rider's pedaling motion to the drivetrain.

Typically, chainring bolts are made of high-strength steel or aluminum alloy to withstand the forces exerted during pedaling. They consist of three main parts:

  • Bolt Head: The bolt head is the part of the chainring bolt that you can see on the outer side of the chainring. It usually has a hexagonal or Torx-shaped socket, which allows for the use of a corresponding tool for tightening or loosening the bolt.
  • Shank: The shank is the threaded portion of the chainring bolt that passes through the chainring and attaches to the crank arm. It is usually a cylindrical shaft with threads running along its length.
  • Nut: The nut is the part of the chainring bolt that secures the bolt to the crank arm. It is a small, usually hexagonal piece that threads onto the shank of the bolt and tightens against the backside of the chainring.

Chainring bolts typically come in sets of five or sometimes four, depending on the crankset configuration. Three or four bolts secure the larger chainring, while the remaining one or two bolts secure the smaller inner chainring. The bolts are evenly spaced around the circumference of the chainrings to ensure even distribution of forces.

When installing or removing chainring bolts, it is important to use the appropriate tool, such as a hex key or a Torx wrench, to prevent damage to the bolt heads and ensure proper tightening torque. Over-tightening or under-tightening the bolts can lead to chainring slippage, poor shifting performance, or even damage to the crankset.

Overall, chainring bolts may seem small and inconspicuous, but they play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of a bicycle's drivetrain system.
